Maia — An heirloom created to hold a story

This locket was created to celebrate the arrival of my first granddaughter, Maia - a piece designed thoughtfully, with every detail chosen to carry meaning.
Her name inspired the heart of the design. In Greek mythology, Maia was the goddess of spring and earth, associated with growth, renewal, and nurturing life. She also gave her name to the month of May - a season of new beginnings.
Because Maia was born in New Zealand, I was also drawn to the Māori meaning of māia: brave, bold, capable, and strong. A beautiful word that speaks of courage and quiet confidence.
Some jewellery marks a moment. Some jewellery holds a story.
The flowers on the inside of the locket were chosen for May. Hawthorn blossom and lily of the valley sit alongside a rose, included as a subtle tribute woven into her middle name, Rosemary. Together they create a small garden of symbolism - spring, remembrance, love, and family connection held in silver.
Two tiny bees surround the letter M, representing the love and partnership at the centre of Maia's world. I liked the idea of them quietly watching over her name.
On the front and on the reverse of the locket are hand-textured details inspired by nature and movement, making the piece feel tactile and organic rather than overly polished. At the centre sits a small green stone, chosen to reflect the colours of earth, growth, and the landscapes connected to the beginning of her story.
What I love most about handmade jewellery is that it allows emotion to live inside an object. Every mark made by hand becomes part of the piece itself.
This locket is not only about celebrating a birth. It is about memory, connection, heritage, and the stories we carry forward through generations.
